I have always loved animals. I grew up on a farm in rural North Yorkshire, and was always found in with the lambs or the pigs! Horses were the absolute love of my life, and from an early age I started drawing them - on everything -including my school books. In fact horses feature quite heavily in my secondary school report usually together with the words day-dreaming.
I left school at fifteen and went on to art college to study art and design, gaining a BTEC diploma after two years. I longed for a career in art, but I ended up in an advertising agency, and then moved into a long career in creative art working and digital re-touching before taking the leap into leadership and management.
It was Christmas 2015, when my daughter bought me a colouring book and pencils, that I re-found my love of drawing, and I haven't looked back! I decided to take the huge leap in January 2017 to become a full time artist, taking pet and equine portrait commissions, working out of my studio at home in a little village near the city of Ripon.
I've always owned or been around horses, and have always had dogs and cats (and rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and rats). I learned to ride at the age of six at the renowned Yorkshire Riding Centre under the watchful eye of Jan Brown and then Jane Bartle Wilson. I competed regularly as a child, and then again later in my 40's.
I had my hip replaced in 2014, and although I could still ride, my confidence wasn't what it was, and sadly, due to this and work commitments, I had to sell my beautiful Trakhener gelding Elf, all 18.2hh of him! Now I take huge pleasure in being around other people's horses, and of course drawing portraits of them.
